About Us
Hospice of the Prairie & Prairie Home Health is an independent, not-for-profit agency dedicated to providing professional and compassionate home health and hospice care to the residents of Southwest Kansas since 1981.
We work with the patient’s own physician to provide top quality, compassionate care through our Medicare/Medicaid certified home health and hospice programs. Hospice of the Prairie & Prairie Home Health accepts Medicare, Medicaid, and Private Insurance.
Hospice of the Prairie, Inc. was formed in the spring of 1980 by the District 19 Kansas State Nurses Association. A grant from the Area Agency on Aging funded the original project. The volunteer organization incorporated in June of that same year. Non-profit, tax-exempt status under the Internal Revenue Code 501 (c) (3) was later obtained.
Hospice services were initially provided by professional nurses, social workers, ministers, and other persons interested in promoting the hospice concept. All services were free of charge.
Rev. Jim Hossler developed the monthly bereavement support group meetings in 1982. He also provided individual spiritual counseling for Hospice clients and their families when needed.
After several years of consideration, the Board of Directors made the decision to seek Medicare certification on March 12, 1991. A full-time Executive Director was hired May 6, 1991, to pursue that goal.
Licensure and Medicare certification was obtained October 31, 1991. Hospice of the Prairie, Inc. was the eighth hospice program to become certified in the state of Kansas.
Home Health licensure was acquired December 1, 1995. Medicare certification for Home Health care specializing in patients with a life-limiting illness was granted March 13, 1996.
Mission Statement
Hospice of the Prairie, Inc. is a non-profit, multi-disciplinary organization offering hospice and other homecare services in a supportive and compassionate manner.
Purpose
To provide state-of-the-art health and homecare services enabling clients to live as comfortably and independently as possible.
Philosophy & Goals
Hospice of the Prairie, Inc. is based on the idea that quality of life is more important than the quantity. In order to maintain dignity and individuality, Hospice supports the choice of persons with a life-limiting illness to live in an environment that is caring and supportive.
To achieve the above, the goals are to:
• Support the individual, family, and friends as the primary unit of care.
• Serve as a liaison between the client, family, and their personal physician.
• Allow families and friends to grieve and assist them in coping with
their losses.
• Increase awareness of healthcare professionals and the community
regarding bereavement issues.
• Educate healthcare professionals and the community in general to be
more sensitive and comfortable interacting with people who are
experiencing a life-limiting illness.
• Work together with other agencies in meeting the healthcare needs
of the community.
• Help to reduce healthcare costs
